After his parents split when he was in the first grade, Gillum and his brother were raised by their mom who worked two teaching jobs to keep their heads above water. He has a younger brother, James, who is a musician. His father, Edward, is a professor of art at California State University, Fresno, and his mother, Suzanne Olmsted, is an artist and teacher. Gerald Earl Gillum was born on in Oakland, California. He made his major-label debut in June 2014, with the album These Things Happen, on RCA. His 2015 single "Me, Myself and I" hit the top of the music charts. 33 on the Billboard R&B/hip hop album chart, and No. In 2012, he independently released his first full-length album, Must Be Nice, which peaked at No. Rapper and producer G-Eazy has collaborated with artists like Lil Wayne and Britney Spears. His 2015 single "Me, Myself and I" hit the top of the music charts. You can find the review I did for Pusha’s new album right here.G-Eazy is a rapper and producer whose collaborated with artists like Lil Wayne and Britney Spears. If you are looking for some lyrical wizardry, go check out Pusha T’s new album “King Push – Darkest Before Dawn: The Prelude”. If you want a really good album for social functions that just seems to blend well with whatever, this album is for you. What all of this means is that I did enjoy G-Eazy’s album, it also means that I think G-Eazy has some work before he really appeals to me as a serious lyricist. There wasn’t a song on this thing that really turned me off which is always nice not having to skip a song when trying to listen through an album. For example the song “For This” featuring IAMNOBODI and the track right before it “Everything Will Be OK” featuring Kehlani.
G-Eazy already has the “vibe” part of the music figured out, this album’s production is beautiful and a lot of the features were a serious treat. G-Eazy has the potential to be a great artist because you get glimpses of serious promise when it comes to straight bars. Every project they put out, seems to have more substance and real confidence than the last. It’s possible that G-Eazy is still trying to find his lyrical abilities and his confidence, similar to hip-hop duo who I really enjoy, The Underachievers. Jay-Z explained it best “I dumbed down for my audience to double my dollars, they criticized me for it, yet they all yell holla”. This is sometimes one of the problems I have with really “poppy” hip-hop, it’s the dumbing down of lyrics to appeal to the mainstream more. G-Eazy you can tell gets pretty close quite a few times to really having some really impressive bars on this album and his last, but for whatever reason only hits the surface level of the lyrical complexity that I feel like he could reach. What does all this mean and what the hell is my point? My point is, this album has some hidden gems when it comes to serious bars, sonically this album is probably one of the better things I’ve heard in awhile and it just “vibes” nicely the whole way throughout. Nothing with any of this is bad, it’s just the vibe of the album and that’s who the sound is geared towards. G-Eazy is really as close as it gets to good hip-hop that’s primarily appealing to state college students. To be completely honest, when I heard a song or two with some friends of friends, I really wasn’t impressed and my whole perception of him was pretty apathetic, maybe even a little doubtful. The point I’m trying to make is, G-Eazy is about as vanilla pop hip-hop as I go. Hopefully I don’t sound like too much of a hipster right now, but hey, that’s the truth and everybody knows it. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing when it comes to music, but die hard hip-hop heads should agree, the best hip-hop is generally not on the radio. All that being said, it’s safe to say G-Eazy’s music could be considered “mainstream,” if you will. G-Easy became a popular name around the time of his first album under RCA Records “These Things Happen” which went all the way to #3 in the US overall and #1 in hip-hop/r&b. G-Eazy’s second album effort under music label RCA Records “When It’s Dark Out” was released on December 4th, 2015.
